The humility of Jesus Christ was far greater than we could ever hope to conceive.  God allowed Himself to be consumed by the finality of our condition of which is humanity’s greatest fear and enemy.  Death for us is invincible where only an act of God could ever defeat it.  The death Jesus experienced was a real death and He completely died this death of ours.  In this condition His humility was revealed in the extent of how powerless God had prepared to let Himself become.  The all-powerful became powerless.  God of very God placed Himself in such a situation that appears to fly in the face of all that people had previously thought about who God really is.  Debates have raged over the last two thousand years as to whether or not Jesus really died or was it His human side that died but not His divine.  Clearly if we are to take the union of God and Humanity in the Person of Jesus Christ seriously, then God’s embrace of our humanity to include our darkness and depravity where its wages lead to death is without question.

Jesus’ whole life was under temptation.  However, He resisted temptation for our sake.  Jesus has what it takes to resist what we could not resist.  In doing so, He carried out His life in the most human way as a real human being should, again, all for our sake.  The question posed to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God. . .” were responded in such a way that only someone who is truly the Son of God would respond.  To relinquish to the devil’s temptations or to the crowd’s goading to come down from the cross would mean that God would be only concerned with Himself.  Such was His love for us that He took on our suffering to an unimaginable depth that only God could endure.  God would not fail so He was prepared to to do what it took to secure us in His fellowship. Yet God showed His divinity through His human actions.

We remind ourselves that the fellowship of the Son with the Father and the Spirit is never in question.  Humanity were in a helpless state.  Therefore, God came to humanity’s plight and made their plight His own.

There is often too much emphasis placed on the negative part of the judgement on Jesus Christ.  It is often viewed in a legal way where the righteous side of God must be satisfied and His wrath appeased.  We must move away from this towards the real nature of the Passion event.  God endured the wrath of humanity against Him.  The Incarnation brought God as close to humanity in an active and dynamic way penetrating us to the core of our being.  This created such an internal hostility in our fallen nature that humanity’s response led to the act of utmost cruelty placed on our Creator by the creature.  As God moved closer to the creature and locked them to His loving embrace in Jesus Christ, humanity wanted nothing but to be rid of Him.  The answer to the problem of Jesus Christ was to kill Him and God allowed this to happen to Himself.  Humanity’s tool of death to drive Jesus out of human existence failed to divide God from humanity and failed to divide God the Son from God the Father.

God’s response to our wrongdoing against Him by trying to kill Him was to rise from the dead.  This showed the futility of our opposition to Him.  In the Incarnation, Immanuel is here and God is with us.  Humanity put Immanuel to death and despite this, God rose from the dead and He is still with us.  We showed how much we hated Him but He showed us how much He loved us by allowing our hate to overtake Him, kill Him and recreate us in the process into new creatures into a new created order with the Father in the Son fit for their fellowship.

We look at the life of Jesus Christ as reflecting who He is in Himself.  Holiness is not about a moral rectitude but about a nature of and way of being.  It is who Jesus Christ is in Himself.  It is the life of Jesus Christ as having the most unique nature and character with the most pure integrity that desires to make things the way they ought to be.  It is the human being who is truly free to share Himself with His creatures.  Our natures are corrupt and the our way of being is dark and depraved.  Jesus Christ only needed to be Himself where who He is in Himself bears down on our natures and sanctifies them in the process.  The darker we became, the brighter the Light of God shone.  Death tried to snuff this Light by the darkness which held us captive but could not.  The Light shone in death’s darkness and destroyed it from the inside out.  In the resurrection this light shone through all creation bringing life to the entire universe.  The Light smashed a pathway through to the other side of death bringing all humanity with Him.

All our ideas about sin as a result of the resurrection have to be re-framed.  Rather than understand Jesus on the Cross as abandoned by the Father, the resurrections shows us the union between the Father and the Son was unbroken.  In addition, it show the union with God and humanity was also unbroken even in death. One died for all and therefore all died. . . shows us that sin cannot be defined as separation from God.  It flies in the face of the hypostatic union in the Incarnation.  If sin separating us from God was true, then the work of Jesus never touches us and the foundation of the gospel crumbles away.  Jesus’ journey through His life, into the Passion and death as well as His descent into hell could not break His bond with the Father and His bond with humanity.  Jesus rises from the dead with this union intact bringing life to all those in Him.  Though sin may attempt to divide it is no match for the uniting and reconciling power of God in Jesus Christ.
