George MacDonald considered himself a poet before being a clergyman. Because his views were quickly considered as unorthodox by the mainstream church, his career in the pulpit was short lived. As a result, he dedicated himself to writing. During his career there was a vast following as a result of his work and was considered one of the giants of the 19th century. However, in the 20th century, interest rapidly declined. In the latter part of the century, there has been a growing interest.
