The Atonement is one of those subjects that can mean a lot of things to a lot of Christians. What we are concerned here is not an atonement theory. There are no atonement theories as the atonement concerns the Person and work of Jesus Christ. We are not just concerned here with the Cross but the whole life of Jesus Christ including His Incarnation. It begins right here at his birth and it concludes with the rolling away of the stone. It is Jesus Christ in His own Person joining Himself to the human race in at-one-ment and thereby never letting us go, However, in explaining the atonement, we can only go so far as His Christ’s own body acts as a veil to its inner workings. It is a mystery where we see something extraordinary going on. But we must reserve humility and prevent our minds from entering into an area that even the cherubim and the seraphim have veiled their eyes.
“We needed an incarnate God, a God put to death, that we might live. We were put to death together with him, that we might be cleansed; we rose again with him, because we were put to death with him; we were glorified with him, because we rose again with him” (Gregory Nazianzen, Oration 45.28).
“Atoning reconciliation would be utterly empty of content, had not God the incarnate Son, true God from true God, suffered and died for us on the Cross” (T F Torrance, The Trinitarian Faith, p. 142).
