Epiphanius Ancoratus 119

But since in our time of life there have arisen an accumulation of other significant heresies, that is, in the time of Valentinian and Valens in the tenth year of their reign and again according to the sixth year of Gratian, which is, the ninetieth year of Diocletian, the tyrant. Because of this grace, all of you and all of us and all the orthodox bishops and all of us together in the Holy Catholic community headed up against the heresies by continuing in the faith appointed beforehand by the holy fathers, have said, above all, to those who are about to undertake the holy washing, they declare and say the following:

“We believe in one God, Father Almighty, Maker of all things both visible and invisible, and also in the one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten from God the Father, only-begotten, that is from out of the Being of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of the same being with the Father, through whom all things came to be, both what is in heaven and what is on earth, both visible and invisible. On which account, for the sake of humanity and for our salvation He came down from heaven and was made flesh from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man, He had taken to Himself the perfect and complete man with a complete soul and a complete body and complete mind and everything that pertains to being a man apart from sin. Not from the sperm of a man, nor was He in a man, but in Himself restored flesh into one holy unity, not in the same way as he spoke and acted in the prophets, but He took on humanity’s nature perfectly and completely. For the Word was made flesh, not having undergone a change and neither changing His divinity into humanity, but uniting them together into one holy perfect union with Himself and the Godhead. He Himself is God, He Himself is Lord, He Himself is King. For the Lord Jesus Christ is “one” and not two. He was crucified for our sake under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and buried and after three days was raised according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven. He is the One who suffered in the flesh, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven along with His own body, gloriously seated at the right hand of the Father, is coming in His own flesh in glory to judge the living and the dead. There will be no end to His kingdom. And in the Holy Spirit, who spoke in the Law and declared through the prophets, came down on the Jordan, spoke in the Apostles, makes His home in the saints. Therefore we believe in Him, the Spirit, that He is the Holy Spirit of God, the Perfect Spirit, the Spirit Paraclete, Uncreated, who goes out from with the Father and receives from out of the Son and we place our trust in Him. We believe and place our trust in the One Holy and Apostolic Church and in one baptism of repentance, and in the resurrection of the dead and a fair judgment of souls and of bodies and in a kingdom of heavens and in eternal life. To those who say that there was a time when the Son was not of the Holy Spirit was not, or that He came from out of nothing or from another type of existence of being by alleging the Son or the Holy Spirit are liable to vary or are subject to change, we anathematize them, that is the universal and apostolic church, the mother of all of us. And for those who do not confess the resurrection of the dead and all the heresies which are not of the correct faith, we also anathematize.”

Because you and your children are well informed and thus fully convinced believing and bringing to perfection the commandments, we hope you pray for us that we receive our portion and inheritance of the same faith and its commandments. And also pray for us as well all those who believe and guard the commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ, in Christ Jesus our Lord, it is through Him and in Him is glory to the Father together with the Holy Spirit from ages to ages, Amen.

Up till now, my dear brothers, our deficiency and lack of strength in our thinking compelled us, your good character urged us forward, even if we are not fit to give anything more, we need help as we reach out, but it is the faithful One in heaven who knows all things. Nevertheless, peace to everyone who falls into line with this canon of the truth and orthodoxy of this faith and upon the God of Israel. Embrace all the saints in the Lord. The slaves in the Lord say a big hello and, most of all, Anatolios. I wrote the words of this book titled Ancoratus and I pray you have strength in the Lord.
