Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 18

T F Torrance
What T F Torrance has done up to now in his book, Space Time and the Resurrection is to carefully map out the significance of the union of God with humanity in the very Person and work of Jesus Christ.  In Jesus Christ we have the completed work of God towards humanity as well as the completed work and response of humanity towards God.  It is without question who Jesus Christ is before the Father.  He is one with the Being of God.  Thus we have in the ascension the reality of who Jesus Christ is as God from God, Light from true Light of the same being with the Father.  The question arises however as to the true nature of the Incarnation.  Did God leave His throne room in…

The Latin Heresy Pt 4

T F Torrance
We begin first with the union of Jesus’ humanity and divinity.  When we are describing the nature of Jesus Christ we are talking at the same time about Jesus the Nazarene.  As much as we stress the term the importance of homoousios to Patri describing the union of beings between The Father and the Son (mia ousia), it is as equally important to describe the union of Jesus Christ with our humanity as mia ousia (one being).  This must be held together at all costs regarding the incarnate Son ‘who for us men was made flesh from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate.’ Thus the doctrine of salvation must be worked out within the very being of who Christ is and what He has done…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 15

T F Torrance
We have to bring time to its end (telos) in Jesus Christ.  Everything that is involved in His being human includes His place in our history, in our community as well as an intrinsic part of our creation.  The reality of Jesus Christ is the eternal God who has stepped into humanity's world order and made Himself part of it without ceasing to be who He truly is in Himself as God of God, Light from Light of the same being with the Father.  This is what the Patristic Fathers refer to as the hypostatic union.  No clear distinction can be made between the humanity of Jesus and His divinity.  This is why Karl Barth refers to Jesus as God and humanity together, reconciled!  We draw this out to its…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 14

T F Torrance
Even though it is without question that the event of the resurrection has occurred in history, it cannot be investigated historically without some degree of difficulty.  When a historian looks at the question of the resurrection, they often do so based on what they deem to be the constancy of space and time.  What is happening is that the concepts and methods are relying on a decaying base of space and time and therefore separating an eternal event from actual history.  If history shows this event has never happened and can never happen then it is presumed that such an event is never likely to happen.  However, what we have before us in the New Testament are witness accounts to this event showing us that indeed something  remarkable has happened. …

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 13

T F Torrance
We by revelation have seen the bridge over and through death has been laid down.  It is no longer a barrier.  With the resurrection of Jesus Christ there is now one of us on the other side of death.  The only human being to have conquered death is rightly King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  Jesus Christ of Nazareth ascends to take up His rightful place.   Unto us a King is born . . . The King has risen from the dead . . . The King sits at the Right hand of the Father in victory over all that humanity could throw at Him. Yahweh is Lord!  Yahweh has died!  Yahweh has risen from the dead!  Yahweh is King!  We have to take great care not to lose…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 12

It has been a long time since I last made a post.  A lot has happened in the last few weeks.  We are foster carers and we have just taken in a 3 month old baby girl and our lives have suddenly become crazy.  Nevertheless, when you have such a young infant to care for, it is so enjoyable and seems to have so much meaning to what we do.  It reinvigorates your perspective on everything.  Personally, I absolutely love babies.  I love seeing things afresh through young eyes.  I love the fact that the milestones are so much more frequent. The most important fundamentals of relationships are established in these first few years.  I have personally witnessed for myself the effects of neglect and abuse that has happened in…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 11

The Resurrection and Reconciliation Reconciliation is so underrated in modern evangelicalism.  We continue to keep in mind the relationship between the incarnation and the resurrection.  In the incarnation God is the Immanuel who has come to reveal to us that He is with us and subsequently for us.  Throughout His whole life God bore our opposition and hatred towards Him but He was still with us and for us.  As Jesus Christ revealed more of the truth of Himself to those of His own, the more those of His own wanted to drive Him out.  The nation of Israel wanted to be rid of Him but God was still with them and He was still for them.  They arrested Him, tried Him beat and whipped Him but God was still…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 10

T F Torrance
The Resurrection and the Atoning work of Jesus Christ We are now going to examine justification, reconciliation and redemption within the context of the Resurrection.  We have to take great care so as not to define these in separate categories.  We are always speaking of these things in a very personalised way where we include God and humanity in the one Person of Jesus Christ.  He is at the centre of every discussion and every topic where every matter concerns Him. The Resurrection and Justification Jesus Christ is the final act of forgiveness towards all human beings.  It is a dynamic act of restoration where God involves Himself in our deplorable and depraved state we were in with the view of taking us to where we ought to be.  He…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 9

At this time of the year, it is only fitting that we touch once again on the Incarnation.  Pastor David Kowalick has rightly noted that the scar on Jesus' stomach is as significant as the scars on His hand, feet and His side.  If we take into consideration both the Incarnation and the Resurrection have the same profound significance we can develop  a clearer understanding of the atoning work of Jesus Christ as including His whole life.  If the gospel is truncated into the Passion event, then the atoning work loses its context and significance. The world was created out of nothing making creation entirely dependant on the Creator but at the same time it has a distinct existence in itself and must not be confused with God.  There is…

Space Time and the Resurrection Pt 8

T F Torrance
The humility of Jesus Christ was far greater than we could ever hope to conceive.  God allowed Himself to be consumed by the finality of our condition of which is humanity's greatest fear and enemy.  Death for us is invincible where only an act of God could ever defeat it.  The death Jesus experienced was a real death and He completely died this death of ours.  In this condition His humility was revealed in the extent of how powerless God had prepared to let Himself become.  The all-powerful became powerless.  God of very God placed Himself in such a situation that appears to fly in the face of all that people had previously thought about who God really is.  Debates have raged over the last two thousand years as to…
