Why Tradition?

Why Tradition?

theology
Who cares about tradition?  This is a very important question.  In the previous post, I highlighted the importance of both scripture and tradition.  In the ancient church, the two worked harmoniously together and one did not contradict the other.  The gospel was spreading long before the New Testament Scriptures became widely available.  There was a manner of speaking and knowing that began to take shape.  When Scripture became more widely available, the tradition that was well established in many communities with many handed onto them by the apostles themselves was confirmed by the scriptures as they became readily available to them. As the different, gospels, such as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John along with the epistles became readily available, those who held firmly to what was first handed to them…

The Way to True Freedom

The Way to True Freedom

theology, Theology
The truth is the truth because it is the truth.  We either serve the truth and allow it to guide us and wash us from what is not true and turning us from darkness to light or we run around like blind fools.  The gospel is the same. Once we see where the truth resides, which resides in the very Person of Jesus Christ who is the Truth of all Truths Personified, then as servants we have no choice but to allow the truth of this very Person to teach us all that is true.  There is no where else to go! Jesus Christ is the ground of all that is true!  It took me many years to come to this all-important realisation.  When we declare the reality of Jesus Christ as…

More on the Trinity

More on the Trinity

theology, Theology, Uncategorized
There appears to be a growing trend of resistance towards Trinitarian theology.  This is unfortunate.  However, it is not surprising.  How can we establish a sound understanding without going so deep as to exasperate those who are trying to grasp its importance?  The Trinity is more about understanding where the ground of all our knowing and understanding of God resides.  Understanding God as Triune helps us to see Him like a Light on top of a hill for all to see.  It is not hidden and reserved for the privileged few.  It is exposed in such a way that all who desire to see and know, will see and know.  Therefore to know God is to begin with God as the starting point.  If we start anywhere else apart from…

Hypostatic Union

Hypostatic Union

theology, Theology
Union is the overriding theme throughout the gospel according to the Trinity.  The implications are far beyond what we are able to fully grasp within our feeble human minds.  Even in history, there appeared to be a certain degree of apprehension on the part of the ancient church as they tried to grapple with this concept in the face of the enemies of the apostolic tradition.  Through healthy and robust conversations between the significant theologians, the idea of union had to be categorically stated to prevent the heresies of Arius, Sabellius,  Apollinarius and Nestorius as well as many others from gaining a foothold within the church.  If union was undermined in any way, the impact is like a domino affect.  Each time there is any hint of even a slight…
